Hondarribia… the old walled town with bright colors
In a wonderful Sunday morning we made our way to Hondarribia to join a guided visit through the village that definitely was too short.
We started in La Asuncion church in High Street which was part of the city Wall back in the old times. We discovered the palaces belonging to the richest families and we were told that The Mad Joanne spent three nights in one of them.
We were fascinated by the stories about the locals: how they managed to win some of the many battles against the French army by using their imagination.
We also found out that the colorful houses, so typical of the area, were painted by the fishermen using the remains of the paint after painting their boats. Red boat…red house, green boat…green. As simple as this.
To end up we went over the harbor and we had some delicious grilled fish , ending in this wonderful way a fantastic day.
We will go back because Hondarribia always surprises us.
